Courses

The following courses are based at the Horticultural Education Centre at Hamilton Gardens. The Centre is part of the Waikato Institute of Technology.
Facilities include: six classrooms, a lab /studio, two horticultural practice barns, five greenhouses and a computer aided drafting lab. Most courses take advantage of the unique surroundings of Hamilton Gardens as the ideal outdoor classroom. |

The Horticultural Education Centre specialises in Amenity Horticulture with training streams in arboriculture, horticulture, floristry, landscape design and horticultural technology.

Certificate in Trade Technology (Horticulture)
Level 3 - One year
Study covers maintenance and establishment of amenity plants, control of pests and diseases, soil science, turf culture, planting design, and horticultural machinery.
Certificate in Floristry Practice
Level 3 - One year.
Requires School Cert pass in English and maths.
Training for floristry assistant or a retail assistant in a nursery.
Certificate in Horticulture (Amenity Horticulture)
Level 4 - One year
Open to people who have successfully completed the Certificate in Trade Technology (Horticulture). Career opportunities in private and public gardens, garden centres and nurseries. |

Certificate in Horticulture (Arboriculture)
Level 4 - One year
This is a one-year full time course teaching the specialist skills of tree surgery and maintenance. Covers tree identification and use, tree climbing and pruning, specialist practices, tree evaluation, tree biology and health. Career opportunities in specialist companies and local authorities.
Diploma in Technology (Landscape Design /Installation)
Level 5 - Two years
Covers landscape and planting design, graphics, professional practice, maintenance, and computer aided draughting, contracting and construction.
Open to those with a Certificate in Trade Technology (Horticulture) or similar.
Diploma in Technology (Horticulture)
Level 5 - 2 years.
Covers soil science, plant identification, pathology, entomology, plant science, plant production, ecology, biodivsity, conservation, horticultural machinery, plant classification, and horticultural management. |
